Valérie Amiraux is an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal, holding the Canada Research Chair in Religious Pluralism and Ethnicity Studies. She is affiliated with the Department of Sociology and attached to the CEETUM (Center for Ethnic Studies of Montreal Universities). Additional affiliations include the CÉRIUM (Center for International Studies and Research) at the University of Montreal.
Her research focuses on the historical intersections of colonial policies and contemporary management of religious diversity, particularly regarding Islam in France. Key themes include secularism, cultural pluralism, and postcolonial dynamics. She critiques institutional and societal stigmatization of Muslim communities, emphasizing continuities between colonial imaginaries and modern governance.
Her notable work, From the Empire to the Republic: On the “Islam of France”, analyzes how colonial-era frameworks persist in shaping public perceptions of Muslim identity and citizenship. She also engages with debates on laïcité, the visibility of religious symbols, and the tension between republican ideals and multicultural realities.
Amiraux’s scholarship bridges historical and contemporary sociopolitical issues, contributing to critical discussions on race, religion, and governance in France and beyond.
