Fuad S. Naeem serves as Assistant Professor of Comparative Theology and Director of the Encountering Islam Initiative at the University of St. Thomas within the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Theology. Previously taught at Gustavus Adolphus College, Williams College, and Georgetown University where he worked at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Theological and Religious Studies—Religious Pluralism (focus: Islam, minor: Christianity) from Georgetown University
- MA in History of Religions—Hinduism and Islam from George Washington University
Research centers on Islamic intellectual traditions with emphasis on:
- Philosophical and theological frameworks in classical Islamic thought
- Sufi mysticism and spiritual practices
- Qur'anic exegesis and scriptural interpretation
- Cross-religious engagement between Muslims and other traditions
- Modern reinterpretations of Islamic scholarship in South Asia
- Responses to modernity in Muslim intellectual history
Publications appear in Muslim World and Islamic Studies journals alongside book chapters and encyclopedia entries. Current book projects analyze Muhammad Qasim Nanautvi's rational theology and Ashraf ‘Ali Thanvi's reformulations of Islamic spirituality in colonial India. As Director of the Encountering Islam Initiative, he leads institutional efforts in Islamic studies and interfaith education while teaching core courses on Abrahamic traditions and introductory Islam.
