Harith Al-Dabbagh is a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal and a researcher at the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales (CÉRIUM). He holds a LL.D. from Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III (2009), with earlier degrees from institutions in France and Iraq. His academic journey includes roles as an assistant professor at the University of Mosul and a lecturer-researcher at Université de Saint-Étienne.
His research focuses on comparative private law, private international law, and legal pluralism, particularly exploring interactions between religious and secular norms. Notable areas include Iraqi family law reforms, legal pluralism in Arab states, and the reception of Muslim family institutions in Canada and France. He has published extensively in French, Arabic, and English.
Al-Dabbagh leads and collaborates on research projects funded by organizations such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Fonds de recherche du Québec, and the Quebec Bar Foundation. Recent projects include studies on legal pluralism in OHADA space, freedom of expression and religious rights, and the migration of religious family laws into Quebec’s legal framework.
He supervises doctoral and master’s students on topics like comparative law reform, arbitration and Sharia, and fundamental rights jurisprudence. His teaching covers comparative law, private international law, and sales law.
Al-Dabbagh actively contributes to academic conferences globally, including events at the Max Planck Institute and the University of Ottawa, addressing themes such as minority rights, legal diversity, and the challenges of pluralism in Middle Eastern jurisdictions.
