Vaike Haas is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at West Virginia University. She is a registered landscape architect in West Virginia with prior professional experience at the firm EDAW (later absorbed by AECOM). Her work focuses on promoting equal access to public greenspace through two research tracks: (1) exploring public spaces with sensitive histories and (2) improving physical access to greenspace while protecting ecological resources in West Virginia.
- Research Interests: Public space design, urban history, ecological conservation, and community engagement.
- Teaching: Instructs BSLA studios (LARC 121, 360, 331) and asynchronous online courses in Sustainable Trails (LARC 334/534, 435/535), recognized with the WVU Online Badge (2023).
- Awards:
- Fulbright Grantee (2008-2009) for research on ethnic integration in Tallinn, Estonia.
- WVU Faculty Award for Excellence in Community Engagement (2019).
- Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture Service Learning Award - Junior Level (2017).
- Grants: Integral to WVU securing the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Trail Accelerator Grant (2020).
Her recent publications (2018-2025) span urban planning, public health, recreation, and cultural heritage. Topics include trail-based physical activity monitoring, pandemic-era physical distancing, mountain bike specialization trends, and historical analysis of Tallinn’s public spaces. Her work emphasizes experiential learning and civic engagement, often partnering with non-profits to support grant-writing and community outcomes through design.
