Tetsuya Yaguchi is a Professor at Waseda University's Faculty of Science and Engineering, School of Creative Science and Engineering, Department of Architecture. With over 20 years of professional experience as an architect and urban designer working on international projects across the United States, Asia, and Middle East countries, he brings extensive practical knowledge to his academic role. He is a registered architect in both Japan and California, and serves on multiple urban planning committees for Tokyo's Adachi, Minato, and Shinjuku wards as well as other municipalities.
Dr. Yaguchi earned his Doctor of Architecture from Waseda University in 2020, following a Master of Urban Design from the University of California at Berkeley (2001-2002), graduate studies at Tokyo Institute of Technology (1993-1995), and undergraduate studies at Tokyo University of Science (1989-1993). Before joining Waseda University in 2016, he worked at prominent firms including EDAW/AECOM as Associate Principal, BMS Design Group (now Page), Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz Architects, and Kajima Corporation.
His research focuses on understanding the physical, social, ecological and technological systems of cities to create sustainable and inclusive urban environments. Key research areas include:
- Green Infrastructure for urban stormwater management and flood mitigation in tropical cities
- Universal Design principles for accessible urban spaces and assistive technologies
- Urban Agriculture and local food systems integration in metropolitan areas
- Pre-Disaster Community Planning and inclusive disaster preparedness games
- Waterfront regeneration in the context of climate change
- Social media analysis for understanding urban landscape perception
Dr. Yaguchi's scholarly work demonstrates a strong focus on practical applications of urban design theory to address contemporary challenges. His recent publications reveal a methodological diversity including multi-agent simulation, spatial analysis of social media data, and community-based participatory research. His work often centers on Asian cities, particularly Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Tokyo, examining how urban systems can be made more resilient and inclusive through innovative design approaches.
His significant contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards:
- Urban Design Award (2018.12) from the American Institute of Architects Japan Chapter for the Thousand Islands Tourism Master Plan
- Pavilion @ Utica Junction, Roseville, MI (2017.04) from the Roseville Downtown Development Authority
- PCBC Gold Nugget Award (2013.05)
- Focused Issue Planning Award (2008) from the American Planning Association, California Chapter for San Leandro TOD
Dr. Yaguchi actively teaches across multiple levels at Waseda University, offering courses in City Planning, Architectural Design, Environmental Aspects of Buildings and Cities, and Regenerative Design of the Built Environment. His current research projects, funded by organizations like the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the River Foundation, focus on green infrastructure assessment, riverfront development, and accessible housing environments. He serves as Director of the Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (2021-2025) and is a concurrent researcher at the Waseda Research Institute for Science and Engineering and the Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society.
His laboratory, the Yaguchi Lab (http://www.yaguchilab.arch.waseda.ac.jp/), brings together students and researchers to explore innovative approaches to urban design challenges. The lab's work bridges theoretical research with practical applications, often collaborating with municipal governments and community organizations to implement sustainable urban solutions.
