Prof. V.V.A.M. (Nine) Knoers is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), affiliated with the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences. She holds a dual background in medicine (MD, 1986) and genetics (PhD cum laude, 1990) from the Catholic University Nijmegen. Her research focuses on identifying genes and pathophysiological mechanisms in inherited renal disorders, with major contributions to nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (V2R/AQP2 genes), renal hypomagnesemia, and syndromic nephronophthisis.
Prof. Knoers leads national and international consortia (e.g., EUNEFRON, EURenOmics, ERKNet) and chairs key committees including the Dutch Scientific Consortium on renal ciliopathies and the Health Sciences group for National GWI roadmap calls. She has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Nature Genetics and the New England Journal of Medicine, and has delivered >250 invited lectures.
Her awards include the Donald Seldin Lectureship (2013) and the Catharijne oeuvre award (2016). She has supervised 29 PhD students, many of whom pursue academic careers. Prof. Knoers actively engages in translational research, clinical diagnostics, and policy-making, serving on advisory boards for organizations such as the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds and WIDE (cancer diagnostics).
