Uxia Otero Gonzalez is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Contemporary History at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Faculty of Geography and History and the Department of History. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, dress, and political power under the Francoist regime (1939–1975). She holds a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela, where her thesis examined Domesticating female bodies in the Franco regime (1939-1975), supervised by Dr. Ramon Villares Paz and Dr. Margarita Barral Martinez.
Her work explores Francoist policies shaping normative femininity through clothing, labor, and media. Key themes include Catholic sartorial codes, rural women’s roles, and the historical memory of mass graves. She has published in journals like Journal of Religious History and Studia Historica, and presented at international conferences on fashion history, gender studies, and post-dictatorship Spain. Otero Gonzalez collaborates with the HISTAGRA research group, studying agrarian and political history in rural contexts.
Recent projects include analyzing bathing suit controversies in 20th-century Spain and tracing material culture in Francoist-era graves. She actively engages in public history initiatives, such as Tecedoras de memoria, to recover marginalized narratives of the dictatorship.
