Utpal Manna

Utpal Manna is a Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, India. He joined IISER TVM as Assistant Professor in May 2009, was promoted to Associate Professor in July 2014, and became a full Professor in January 2020. Prior to joining IISER, he held postdoctoral positions at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, Germany (2007-2009) and Institut Mittag Leffler, Sweden (2007).

His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming, USA (2007), M.Sc. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2003), and B.Sc. (Honours) from Rahara Ramkrishna Mission Vivekanada Centenary College, University of Calcutta (2001).

Professor Manna's research focuses on stochastic partial differential equations, particularly in the context of fluid dynamics and mathematical physics. His work spans stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations for ferromagnetism, nematic liquid crystal models, and various hydrodynamic systems with stochastic forcing. He has made significant contributions to understanding well-posedness, regularity, and large deviations for these complex systems.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on stochastic PDEs with jump processes, particularly Levy noise, and their applications to physical models. He has published extensively in top mathematical journals including Journal of Differential Equations, Communications in Mathematical Physics, and Stochastics and Partial Differential Equations.

Among his notable achievements are the Kerala State Young Scientist Award 2014 and being selected as part of Indian delegations to major international mathematics conferences including ICM 2014, ICIAM 2015, ICM 2018, and ICIAM 2019.

Professor Manna has supervised several PhD students including Dr. Manil T Mohan (2014), Dr. Debopriya Mukherjee (2019), and Dr. Akash Ashirbad Panda (2019), with current supervision of Mr. Soham Sanjay Gokhale and Mr. P. L. Mahendranath. His research has been supported by multiple grants from SERB, The Royal Society (UK), NBHM, and DST. He has organized international workshops including the Indo-UK Workshop on Stochastic PDEs (2015) and the ICTS Winter School on Stochastic Analysis (2012).
