Benoît Perthame

Benoît Perthame serves as Professor (classe exceptionnelle) at Pierre and Marie Curie University since 1993 and Director of the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions since 2013. Previously, he led INRIA's M3N and BANG teams (1998-2013) and held positions at École Normale Supérieure (1983-1988 as Assistant Professor; 1997-2007 on duty) and University of Orléans (1988-1993).

His research spans mathematical modeling for biomedical applications, tumor growth analysis, bacterial motion kinetics, evolutionary models, neural network mean-field theories, hyperbolic systems, and optimal control. Key contributions include kinetic equation formulations, averaging lemmas, and Vlasov-Poisson system solutions, bridging rigorous mathematics with biological and physical applications through partial differential equations and conservation laws.

Recent publications emphasize mathematical neuroscience (neuronal network dynamics), chemotaxis modeling (bacterial traveling waves), and stochastic conservation laws, demonstrating consistent focus on kinetic theory applications to biological phenomena while advancing fundamental PDE analysis techniques.

He edited Modelisation Mathematique et Analyse Numerique (1997-2005) and serves on editorial committees for Communications in PDE, Calcolo, DCDS(B), and other leading mathematical journals.

As Director of Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions, he leads one of Europe's premier mathematics research centers focused on partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and interdisciplinary applications in biology and physics.
