Ute Lewitzka is a Professor and Head of the Research Group 'Suicide Research' at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden. She holds a medical degree from Humboldt University Berlin and Technische Universität Dresden, and earned her postdoctoral lecture qualification (venia legendi) in Psychiatry in 2018. Her work focuses on suicide prevention, lithium's anti-suicidal effects, and biological markers in mood disorders.
Professional roles include Senior Psychiatrist, Visiting Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University (2010–2012), and leadership in suicide prevention organizations like the German Society of Suicide Prevention (DGS). She has received awards including the DGPPN Poster Award (2004) and multiple Research Fellowships from Dalhousie University.
Her research spans suicide prevention program efficacy, biological correlates of suicidal behavior, and interventions like resilience training. She leads editorial roles in BMC Psychiatry and chairs the German Society of Suicide Prevention. Current projects explore lithium's role in acute suicidal ideation and cross-cultural suicide prevention strategies.
