Philipp Ritter, MD, PhD, is a Clinical Professor and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden. He leads the Affective Disorders Unit and holds a postdoctoral qualification (venia legendi) in Psychiatry. His clinical practice focuses on bipolar and depressive disorders, integrating chronobiological mechanisms, sleep architecture analysis, and inflammatory pathways into patient care.
Education includes an MBBS from University College London (1996-2001), a PhD in Medicine from TU Dresden (2012), and postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology. He coordinates the German Network for Bipolar Disorder (BipoLife) and chairs the Task Force on Chronobiology in Bipolar Disorders for the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD).
Research emphases include melatonin regulation in mood disorders, cytokine profiles in euthymic patients, and sleep spindle abnormalities. His work bridges basic science (e.g., IL-6 receptor studies) with clinical applications (e.g., esketamine toxicity).
Honors include the Suckling Memorial Prize (1998) and Philip Seth Belasco Prize (2001). He serves on editorial boards for the International Journal of Bipolar Disorders and contributes to ECNP guidelines on bipolar pharmacotherapy during pregnancy.
