Úrsula Oswald Spring is a full-time Professor and Researcher at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and the first MRF-Chair on Social Vulnerability at the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). She has been an active member of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) since 1977 and served as its President (1998–2002). She was the General Secretary of the Latin-American Council for Peace Research (2002–2006) and is currently its Honorific President.
- Specializes in peace and conflict resolution processes across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Spain.
- Lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II and the Special Report on Extreme Events.
- Co-founded the Peasant University of the South in Mexico and advises women and environmental movements.
Her research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to environmental development, social vulnerability, and peacebuilding. She coordinated Mexico’s national water research network (2009–present) and served as the first Minister of Environmental Development in Morelos (1992–1998). With over 48 books and 320 scientific articles, she co-edits the Security Handbooks series published by Springer Verlag.
