Timothy Downs is a Professor in the Department of Sustainability and Social Justice at Clark University. He holds a Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering from UCLA (1998), an M.S. in Ocean Engineering from University of Hawaii (1990), and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University (1984). With over 30 years of field experience, his research examines human-environment interactions with emphasis on climate justice, water systems, and community health.
His research integrates environmental science, engineering, and social justice frameworks to address:
- Climate impact cascades on water, health and ecosystems
- Environmental exposure pathways in vulnerable communities
- Participatory co-creation of sustainability solutions
- Urban and regional resilience planning
Major funded projects include:
- NSF PIRE grant: 'Co-creating Research Capacities to Mitigate Climate-Change Impacts in Central Mexico' (2023-2026, $2.1M)
- NSF IRES Program: 'Transdisciplinary Research Capacity Building' (2020-2023)
- NIEHS project: 'Strengthening Vulnerable Communities in Worcester' (2005-2009)
Advises graduate researchers on projects across Mexico, Zambia, Peru, and New England. Coordinates international student fieldwork teams studying climate resilience in partnership with the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
