Dr. Ursula M. Kuhar serves as a Senior Lecturer at Indiana University's O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where she joined the faculty in August 2016. She founded and directs the O'Neill in Scotland study abroad program and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in performing arts organizations, leadership, organizational behavior, community engagement, and arts education. Her professional background includes executive roles at Washington Concert Opera and Sweet Briar College, complemented by active consulting for arts organizations nationwide in strategic planning and artistic administration.
Her academic credentials include a Doctor of Music in Voice from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (2011), a Master of Music in Music Education from Butler University (2007), and a Bachelor of Science in Arts Administration with Honors from Butler University (2005).
Dr. Kuhar's research integrates cultural policy with practical arts administration, emphasizing arts education accessibility, community-driven engagement models, labor dynamics in creative sectors, nonprofit governance, advocacy strategies, and sustainable fundraising. Her work bridges academic theory and real-world application through frequent conference presentations and practitioner collaborations.
Her honors include the Association of Arts Administration Educators/NEA Mentorship Award (2024-25), IU Trustees Teaching Award (2020), CITL Active Learning Grant (2019), and O'Neill Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (2018). She also received recognition for advising the Undergraduate Student Arts Managers, which earned Indiana University's 2018 New Student Organization of the Year Award.
As founding Faculty Advisor for the Undergraduate Student Arts Managers, she mentors students in professional development and organizational leadership. Her grant portfolio includes the CITL Active Learning Grant supporting pedagogical innovation. Service roles encompass Indiana Federal State Captain for the National Arts Action Summit and co-chairing the Inaugural Indiana Arts Commission Homecoming (2017).
Dr. Kuhar actively shapes national discourse through the Association of Arts Administration Educators and National Guild for Community Arts Education. Her Scotland study abroad program creates international learning opportunities, while her Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions background informs her artist-educator perspective across U.S., South American, and European performance contexts.
