Dr Unaisi Narawa is a Lecturer at the University of Waikato’s Te Piringa Faculty of Law since 2023, serving as Convenor of Pacific Engagement. She holds a PhD from The University of Queensland (UQ) and advanced degrees from the University of the South Pacific (USP), including a Master of Laws and Post Graduate qualifications in Tertiary Teaching and Legislative Drafting. Her career spans over a decade in academia, government, and law, including roles as Senior Government Lawyer in Nauru’s Department of Justice and Border Control, and Legislative Counsel for the Parliament of Nauru.
Her research focuses on Pacific legal systems, customary law, Indigenous methodologies, family law, and climate change impacts on legal frameworks. She actively participates in committees such as the Australasian Law Academics Association (New Zealand Chapter) and the University of Waikato’s Pacific Strategic Committee.
Dr Narawa teaches courses on Pacific legal systems, family law, and Indigenous research methodologies. Her academic contributions include over 15 publications, emphasizing Pacific legal pluralism and cross-cultural legal applications. She is involved in impactful projects like the Niue Infrastructure Investment Facility (NIIF) and global conferences on constitutionalism and legal pluralism.
