Dr. Umesh Haritashya is a Professor and Director of the Sustainability Program at the University of Dayton’s College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Earth and Environmental Geosciences. He also contributes to the Hanley Sustainability Institute. With a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (2005), his postdoctoral work included NASA’s GLIMS project and USAID collaborations. He teaches courses in environmental geology, remote sensing, geomorphology, and glacial geology.
His research focuses on climate change impacts on the cryosphere, glacial hydrology, and high-mountain hazards like GLOFs and landslides. Using satellite and field data, he explores glacier dynamics, sediment transport, and sustainable development connections. His interdisciplinary work spans over $3 million in grants since 2012, including NASA-funded projects on Himalayan glaciers and Karakoram hazards.
Key research interests include machine learning in remote sensing, GIScience applications, and cryospheric geomorphology. He has authored/co-authored numerous publications on glacial lakes, climate change, and disaster risk reduction, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to mountain hazards and sustainability challenges.
