Dr. Umberto Baresi is a Guest Lecturer in the School of Architecture & Built Environment at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), specializing in urban and environmental planning with international experience in Australia and Italy. He holds a PhD from the University of Queensland and degrees from Politecnico di Milano. His research focuses on environmental governance, strategic assessment, and sustainable development, particularly addressing human impacts on ecosystems through urban planning. Key projects include contributions to the National Environmental Science Program’s Marine and Coastal Hub and the Great Barrier Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program.
Teaching roles include instructing courses on environmental planning and community planning at QUT. Awards include QUT’s Small Learning and Teaching Grant (2021) and the Centre for the Environment Early Career Researcher Grant. He is a member of professional associations such as the International Association for Impact Assessment and the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic, and Social Policy.
His recent research emphasizes improving strategic environmental assessment frameworks and community engagement in ecosystem restoration. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on governance systems and policy instruments to enhance water quality and agricultural sustainability in the Great Barrier Reef catchments. Current supervision focuses on collaborative governance and agricultural practice change.
