Uma Mahadevan, MD, is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Colitis and Crohn's Disease Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Her expertise lies in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly pregnancy and drug safety. She completed her MD at SUNY Brooklyn, residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai, and gastroenterology fellowship at UCSF. She has conducted extensive research on IBD therapies during pregnancy, leading the PIANO Registry and contributing to global guidelines on IBD management.
Dr. Mahadevan has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the AGA IMIBD Research Mentor Award (2022) and the Sherman Prize for Innovation (2022). Her work focuses on pregnancy outcomes, biologic safety, and digital health innovations, such as telemedicine and IBD-focused chatbots. She has published over 100 articles and mentors fellows in advanced IBD fellowships.
Her research emphasizes IBD drug safety, maternal-fetal outcomes, and cellular mechanisms of disease. The PIANO Registry, a national study on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes in IBD patients, is a cornerstone of her contributions. She also explores diet and nutritional interventions, such as the SEAMUS trial investigating dietary therapies in IBD.
