Peter D. Higgins

Peter D. Higgins is a Collegiate Professor of Gastroenterology and Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his MD and PhD in molecular cancer biology at Duke University, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship and MSc in Clinical Research Design at the University of Michigan.

His research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly intestinal fibrosis and patient-reported outcomes. Current work includes anti-fibrotic therapies, biomarker-guided treatment, and ultrasound-based fibrosis measurement. Recent studies explore JAK inhibitors and sulfidogenic microbes in IBD pathogenesis.

Dr. Higgins contributes to national IBD care guidelines and serves as the University of Michigan GI Division Research Advisory Council Chair. He is actively involved in the Precision Health Initiative and mentors students in clinical research.
