Uma Krishnamurti is a Professor of Pathology and Director of Breast Pathology at Yale School of Medicine. She joined Yale in 2021 after serving as Principal Investigator and Director of the Breast Satellite Tissue Bank of Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University from 2015 to 2021. Her clinical expertise spans breast pathology, cytopathology, and gynecologic pathology, with significant contributions to cancer reporting standards including authoring the College of American Pathologists (CAP) gynecologic cancer reporting synoptic templates.
Dr. Krishnamurti's educational background includes an MBBS (1985) and MD (1990) from the University of Delhi, followed by a PhD from the University of Minnesota (1999). She completed her residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Minnesota and the University of Pittsburgh (2003), followed by a Fellowship in Cytopathology at the University of Pittsburgh (2004). She is board certified in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology since 2003.
Her research focuses on diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive markers of triple-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer, with numerous publications exploring molecular mechanisms, tumor biomarkers, and clinical correlations. She has made significant contributions to understanding HPV genotypes, cervical cytology challenges in transgender patients, and molecular characterization of breast cancer subtypes. Her work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in developing more precise diagnostic and prognostic tools for breast cancer management.
Dr. Krishnamurti has been actively involved in professional organizations, serving as course faculty at the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and College of American Pathologists (CAP) annual meetings. She chaired the Research and Current Concepts Committee of the ASC and served on the American Joint Commission on Cancer Expert Panel for Vulva Cancer Staging. Currently, she serves on the Breast section of the Cancer Committee of the CAP and on the ASC Bulletin and Cytopath Podcast Committee.
Among her professional recognitions are the Emory Doctors Day Recognition (2021) and the Golden Apple Award for Residential Education from Emory University (2019). Her leadership extends to developing standardized reporting templates and contributing to national cancer staging protocols.
Dr. Krishnamurti's collaborative research network is extensive, with frequent co-authors including Tong Sun, Adebowale Adeniran, Haiying Zhan, Peter Podany, Darin Dolezal, and Guoping Cai. Her work often involves multi-institutional collaborations that advance the understanding of breast cancer biology and improve diagnostic practices.
As Director of Breast Pathology at Yale, she leads a specialized team focused on breast cancer diagnostics and research. Her laboratory work integrates traditional pathology with molecular diagnostics, particularly focusing on triple-negative breast cancer and HER2-positive breast cancer subtypes. She is actively involved in developing more precise diagnostic criteria and exploring novel therapeutic targets based on molecular profiling of breast tumors.
