Ulrike Garde is an Associate Professor and Honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie University's School of International Studies, leading the Department of German Studies. Her research focuses on multilingualism in performance, intercultural theatre practices, and German-Australian cultural exchanges. She holds a PhD from Monash University and degrees from The University of Melbourne, Universite de Toulouse, and the University of Bonn.
Research interests include multilingual theatre strategies, authenticity in documentary theatre, and the impact of internationalization on performing arts. Key projects include Threatre and Internationalization (Routledge, 2021) and studies on Berlin's multilingual stage. Awards include the 2024 Faculty of Arts Educational Leader Award and multiple teaching citations.
Her work explores linguistic diversity in performance, institutional frameworks for international theatre collaboration, and the reception of German playwrights in Australia. Current projects investigate language use in Berlin theatre and intercultural pedagogy.
