Ulrika Nilsson is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Stockholm University, specializing in analytical dermatochemistry. Her research focuses on the development of analytical methods and techniques for studying compounds involved in skin sensitization and contact allergy. She has served as deputy prefect at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry and is responsible for the PhD program in analytical chemistry at Stockholm University.
Dr. Nilsson completed her PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 1992 and began working as a researcher at Stockholm University in November 1997. She became a docent in 2005 and was appointed Professor in 2014. Prior to her position at Stockholm University, she worked as a researcher at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) from 1988 to November 1997.
Her research group develops high-sensitivity/high-selectivity methods, including 2D-reversed phase/normal phase HPLC/MS and SPME/GC/MS, to measure trace amounts of skin sensitizers in complex commercial products and materials. Current research includes analytical dermatochemistry, method development for skin allergens, and studying skin uptake, occurrence in products, structure-activity relationships, and mechanisms behind hapten formation. She is a member of the Swedish Contact Dermatitis Group (SKDG) and collaborates with dermatologists and researchers in the field of contact allergy. Her recent work focuses on textile pollutants, fragrance hydroperoxides, isothiocyanates, resin acids, and developing methods for sustainable textile production within circular economy frameworks.
Her recent publications reveal strong trends in analytical method development for detecting hazardous chemicals in consumer products, particularly textiles and cosmetics. The research spans from fundamental analytical chemistry to applied environmental and health studies, with emphasis on skin sensitization mechanisms and exposure assessment. Her work bridges analytical chemistry with practical applications in consumer safety and environmental health.
