Prof. Ulrich Wagner is a Professor of Quantitative Economics at the University of Mannheim and a Research Associate at the ZEW (Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research). He holds the Chair of Quantitative Economics and leads research in environmental and climate economics. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at Carlos III University in Madrid and conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University's Earth Institute after earning his PhD from Yale University (2006).
His research focuses on environmental economics, industrial organization, and public finance, with publications in top journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. Wagner serves on editorial boards of leading journals and has secured substantial grants from the European Research Council (ERC) and German Research Foundation (DFG).
Key achievements include the 2015 Erik Kempe Award for work on carbon leakage mechanisms in EU emissions trading. His research explores carbon pricing effectiveness, climate policy design, and the interplay between environmental regulations and industrial competitiveness.
Wagner actively supervises doctoral candidates at ZEW and is involved in pan-European research networks like EPREE (Evaluating Environmental Performance and Regulation of Enterprises in Europe). He also engages in policy analysis through projects like the ERC-funded HEAL initiative examining climate policy impacts on health and labor markets.
