Ulf Zander is Professor of History at Lund University's Department of History within the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. With a career spanning over two decades since his 2001 doctoral thesis, he has established himself as a leading scholar in historical consciousness, cultural memory, and the intersection of history with visual media. His work bridges academic rigor with public historical discourse, examining how historical narratives shape national identities across Scandinavia and internationally.
Professor Zander's research centers on how history is communicated and utilized in contemporary society. His scholarship examines historical narratives in monuments, film, and public discourse, with particular focus on Swedish history from the late 19th to early 21st century. He investigates identity formation, nationalism, and the representation of traumatic historical events including the Holocaust and World War II. His work on Raoul Wallenberg's legacy and the cinematic portrayal of Swedish historical figures like Charles XII demonstrates his unique approach to visual history and memory politics. Zander has significantly contributed to understanding how historical consciousness shapes national identities across the Baltic Sea region and United States.
His recent publications reveal a growing emphasis on cinematic representations of history and Holocaust memory politics. Zander's work consistently demonstrates engagement with visual culture as a site for negotiating historical understanding and national identity, with particular attention to monuments, film, and public memory practices. His scholarship shows remarkable continuity in examining how historical narratives are constructed, contested, and deployed in contemporary society.
