Prof. Dr. Ufuk Günesdogan is a prominent academic in developmental biology, currently serving as a Professor of Biochemistry at the Health and Medical University Erfurt (since 2024) and Group Leader at the University of Göttingen (since 2017). He holds dual affiliations with the Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB) and the Department of Developmental Biology. His research focuses on the development of mammalian primordial germ cells (PGCs), exploring transcriptional programming and epigenetic modifications critical to their role in transmitting genetic information across generations. Key techniques include in vivo/in vitro models, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and genome-wide analyses.
Education: Undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Braunschweig (Germany), followed by a predoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (2006–2010). Postdoctoral training at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge (2010–2015), culminating in a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2015–2017).
Research interests emphasize understanding how PGCs transition from epiblast cells, with a focus on enhancer activation, DNA demethylation, and chromatin dynamics. Major contributions include uncovering NANOG’s role in germ cell induction and PRMT5’s protective role in genomic integrity during embryonic development.
