Udo Reichl

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Reichl is the Director of the Department of Bioprocess Engineering at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and holds the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. He has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society since 2000 and has intermittently served as Managing Director of both the Max Planck Institute and the Institute for Process Engineering at Otto von Guericke University.

• Education: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (University of Stuttgart, 1991), Postdoctoral Fellowships (University of Stuttgart, University of British Columbia), Diploma in Biology (Saarland University, 1987).

Research Interests center on animal cell culture technology, downstream processing of vaccines, and mathematical modeling of bioprocesses. His group focuses on optimizing viral-based production processes, chromatographic purification methods, and quantitative analysis of cellular metabolic networks, with a particular emphasis on mammalian cell growth and virus-host interactions.

Publication Trends reveal expertise in viral vaccine production, defective interfering particles, glycosylation analysis, and process intensification, with applications in influenza, Zika, and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development, as well as oncolytic virus therapies.
