Achim Kienle

Prof. Dr. Achim Kienle serves as Professor for Automation/Modeling at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg since 2002 and concurrently leads the "Process Synthesis and Process Dynamics" research group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems since 1998, where he was appointed external scientific member in 2007.

His academic foundation includes a Diplom-Ingenieur in Chemical Engineering from University of Stuttgart (1983-1989), a 1997 dissertation on "Nonlinear wave phenomena and stability of stationary states in distillation columns", and 2002 habilitation on "Nonlinear Dynamics of chemical Processes" at Stuttgart's mechanical engineering faculty.

Kienle's research pioneers computer-aided modeling of complex chemical systems with emphasis on nonlinear dynamics and process control. His work spans reactive distillation, membrane reactors, population balance modeling for particulate systems (crystallization/granulation), and plantwide process dynamics, with significant applications in virus infection modeling for cell cultures.

His scientific recognition includes:

• Honorary doctorate from Technical University of Donetzk (2011)
• Three-time recipient of best doctoral thesis supervision award (2007, 2011, 2013)
• Golden Jubilee Visiting Fellowship (UDCT Bombay, 2004)
• Election to Max Planck Society Scientific Council (2001-2002)

As former Dean (2007-2009) and Vice-Dean (2005-2007) of his department, Kienle has shaped academic governance while serving as grant reviewer for DFG, Volkswagen-Stiftung, and European Research Council. His mentorship is evidenced by multiple best-thesis awards.

He currently co-coordinates the "Dynamic Systems in Biology/Medicine and Process Engineering" research center (since 2008) and leads his Max Planck research group focused on industrial process innovation.
