Prof. Dr. Udo Hebel is President of the University of Regensburg and Professor of American Studies. He previously served as Vice President (2006-2008) and Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Literatures (2003-2005). His administrative leadership includes directing the Regensburg European American Forum (REAF) and presiding over the German Association for American Studies (2011-2014).
Hebel holds a Dr. phil. (1988) and Dr. phil. habil. (1995) from Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, with state examinations in English and German education. His Fulbright scholarship at Mississippi College (1978-1979) initiated his transatlantic academic focus.
Hebel's research explores Transnational American Studies, analyzing cultural memory across borders, political iconography, and early American literature. His work intersects visual culture, historical narratives, and identity politics, emphasizing transnational dialogues in cultural production. Recent scholarship examines presidential iconography and interpictorial discourse in visual media.
His publications reflect sustained engagement with memory politics and visual culture, tracing ideological shifts in American self-representation from Puritan eras to contemporary presidencies. Articles demonstrate methodological innovation in analyzing cultural artifacts as transnational palimpsests.
