Tzu-Jing Yang is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany, working in the research group of Melanie McDowell on membrane protein biogenesis. He was awarded a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2023 for his project investigating the SND pathway in integral membrane protein delivery.
Yang completed his academic training at National Taiwan University:
- Master's degree at National Taiwan University
- PhD in Biophysics and Structural Biology at the Institute of Biochemical Sciences, National Taiwan University
His research focuses on the biogenesis of integral membrane proteins (IMPs), which constitute about 30% of the eukaryotic proteome and are crucial for cellular functions and drug targeting. He investigates the SND pathway, an alternative route for IMP delivery to the endoplasmic reticulum, especially when primary pathways are impaired. Previously, he studied nucleocytoplasmic trafficking of tumor suppressors and coronavirus receptor recognition and immune evasion, demonstrating interdisciplinary expertise across biophysics and molecular life sciences.
Yang has received the following scientific award:
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (2023)
As a postdoctoral researcher, Yang does not have advisees. His current research is funded exclusively by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship, which supports early-career scientists through international mobility and advanced training. The project represents significant recognition of his potential in membrane protein research.
Yang is a member of the Membrane Protein Biogenesis research group led by Melanie McDowell at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, contributing to cutting-edge investigations into fundamental cellular mechanisms with implications for drug development and disease understanding.
