Tyrone Tillery is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He specializes in African American and Civil Rights history, with a focus on race and intergroup relations. Dr. Tillery holds a Ph.D. from Kent State University and has served as Executive Director of the NAACP Detroit Branch. His research includes studies on Claude McKay and Detroit’s racial history (1943–1968). He teaches undergraduate courses such as African American History since 1877 and graduate seminars on the Civil Rights Movement and W.E.B. Du Bois.
- Received the 1993 Gustavus Myers Center Outstanding Book Award for Claude McKay: A Black Poet's Struggle for Identity.
- Contributed to Phylon: The Journal of Race and Culture.
Research interests extend to the Harlem Renaissance and distance education initiatives. He has presented at conferences like the Southwestern Historical Association and the Fourth Annual Conference on Latino Issues.
