Professor Mia Bay is the Roy F. and Jeanette P. Nichols Professor of American History at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, Department of History. Her research focuses on American and African American intellectual, cultural, and social history, with recent emphases on black women’s thought, African American citizenship, and race and transportation. She has been affiliated with numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Library of Congress' Civil Rights History Project.
Her education includes a B.A. from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from Yale University. Bay has received prestigious awards such as the Bancroft Prize and PROSE Award for her work, particularly Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance. She serves on editorial boards for journals like Reviews in American History and advises institutions like the Gilder Lehrman Center.
Beyond academia, Bay contributes to public history projects, including exhibits on segregation and civil rights. Her current research explores African American perspectives on Thomas Jefferson. She has collaborated with organizations such as the National Humanities Center and the W.E.B. Du Bois Center, demonstrating her commitment to interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship.
