Tyler G. Johnson is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at Boise State University, where he has been a faculty member since 2008. He previously served as the director for the Master of Athletic Leadership Program from 2013-2016 and maintains an external affiliation as a Faculty Associate at Arizona State University (2007-2008). Dr. Johnson teaches future physical education teachers and sport coaches, bringing his expertise in curriculum and instruction to prepare the next generation of educators.
Dr. Johnson earned his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University in 2007, following MS and BS degrees in Physical Education from Brigham Young University in 2004 and 2002, respectively.
His research focuses on designing and implementing positive sport and exercise experiences for young people across various settings. Key areas include participant motivation in physical activity settings, youth physical activity levels, philosophical foundations of physical education, and physical education teacher education. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and education.
Dr. Johnson has maintained a consistent publication record from 2007 through 2023, with 44 total research outputs including recent articles on meritocracy in kinesiology, writing in physical education, Aristotelian philosophy in sport, professional learning communities in physical education, and pick-up games in educational institutions. His research spans interdisciplinary areas connecting education, philosophy, and physical activity.

He is also active professionally as an Editor for the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, President-elect/President/Past President of a professional organization, and member of the Idaho Association of Health, PE, Recreation, and Dance.
