Dr Ty Matthews is a Senior Lecturer at Deakin University's School of Life and Environmental Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Marine Science. He holds a PhD and BSc from Deakin University. His research focuses on aquatic ecosystems, particularly the ecological impacts of environmental flows, climate change adaptation, and the role of drought refuges. He has led projects on river flow regimes, invasive species management, and eDNA applications for biodiversity monitoring.
Matthews' work spans freshwater, estuarine, and marine systems, emphasizing practical conservation solutions. He has secured over $2 million in grants, including studies on fishery dynamics, marine pest detection, and river health assessments. He actively supervises doctoral students, with research topics ranging from eel genomics to coastal shark movements.
His teaching includes undergraduate courses in ecology and marine biology, complemented by extensive supervisory roles guiding over 20 students. Key collaborations involve government agencies like Barwon Water and the Victorian Fisheries Authority.
