Turid Fånes Sætermo

Turid Fånes Sætermo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and also serves as a senior researcher at NTNU Social Research, Department of Diversity and Inclusion. She is a social anthropologist with extensive experience in migration and integration research, holding a PhD and having published numerous academic works in her field.

Her research interests focus on migration, integration, belonging, exclusion, diversity and citizenship, with particular attention to individual experiences in relation to structural conditions. Sætermo employs qualitative methodologies to examine how integration is experienced, understood and practiced in different ways across Norway's multicultural context. Her recent work has concentrated on refugees with low literacy, rural integration processes, and the everyday practices of integration workers.

Sætermo's recent publications reveal a strong focus on the challenges faced by refugees with limited education in Norway's integration system, workplace diversity initiatives, and the narratives of integration workers. Her research demonstrates how categorization systems within integration policies create different pathways for refugees and labor migrants, often resulting in precarious outcomes for those with limited literacy.

As co-coordinator of NTNU's Migration Hub network, Sætermo plays an active role in connecting migration researchers across the university. She teaches courses on migration and multicultural societies, analytical strategies, diversity and integration, and speech/text interpretation, while supervising master's theses on related topics.
