Turid Borgestrand Øien is an Associate Professor in the Department of the Built Environment at Aalborg University's Faculty of Engineering and Science. Her research focuses on the interplay between humans and the built environment, particularly addressing social and health-related conditions in indoor spaces, including universal design, lighting, mold prevention, and accessibility. She has held roles in academic leadership, including membership in advisory boards such as Dansk Standards' Accessibility Committee and the Universal Design Hub. Øien's teaching spans master's programs in Lighting Design, Inclusive Architecture, and Building Physics. She has supervised doctoral student Senja Ruohonen and contributed to over 50 research outputs, including projects on ventilation systems, lighting interventions for visually impaired individuals, and sustainable building practices. Notable awards include the 2008 Talentpris. Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to health, education, and sustainable cities.
Education:
- PhD in 'Mold Problems in Homes - Practices and Policies' (2014-2017)
- Master of Architecture from Aarhus School of Architecture (2002-2008)
- Preparatory Art Education (2000-2002)
Research Interests: Universal design principles, lighting's impact on health, mold mitigation strategies, and user-centered building practices. Her work bridges theory and practice through collaborative methodologies like ethnographic action research.
