Tuomas Eerola is Professor of Music Cognition at Durham University, specializing in empirical music research. His work investigates music-induced emotions, cross-cultural perception, and cognitive processing of musical structures. Eerola leads the Music and Science Lab and directs the MA in Music Psychology program.
Current projects examine how music reduces loneliness through social surrogacy effects and cultural variations in harmonic perception. His research combines psychophysiological measurements, computational modeling, and large-scale cross-cultural experiments.
Eerola champions open science practices and develops tools for analyzing musical synchrony. He has led major grants including the AHRC-funded 'Interpersonal Entrainment in Music Performance' project.
