Tuomas Aivelo is an Assistant Professor at Leiden University, affiliated with the Science Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL). His work bridges natural and social sciences, focusing on citizen science, disease ecology, human-animal interactions, and science education. He leads the Helsinki Urban Rat Project, which investigates urban rat ecology, environmental policy, and educational engagement through collaborations with schools, municipalities, and NGOs.
Education: PhD in Biology (Madagascar fieldwork on lemur parasites), postdoctoral research in Swiss Alps tick ecology, and later transition to research group leadership. Current grants include a Finnish Research Council Academy Fellowship (2023–2027).
Research interests emphasize multispecies urban ecosystems (e.g., Dutch homes' biodiversity, urban rat behavior) and the societal dimensions of science education, particularly addressing sex/gender representation in biology curricula.
Notable awards include the J.V.Snellman Prize for Science Communication (2019) and recognition for his book Loputtomat Loiset (Endless Parasites). He advises Finnish Parliament and international bodies on One Health and science education, and writes a monthly nature column for Tiede Luonto magazine.
