Tula Goenka is a Professor in the Television, Radio and Film Department at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She also serves as Graduate Program Director and is affiliated with Women’s and Gender Studies and South Asian Studies programs. Born in Calcutta, India, she began her career as a film editor for renowned directors like Mira Nair and Spike Lee before focusing on documentaries addressing social justice and cultural heritage.
Her research interests span multimedia storytelling, Indian cinema, and human rights advocacy. Notable works include the award-winning documentary Dancing On Mother Earth and the SUBollywood program, which immerses students in Mumbai’s film industry. She co-founded the Syracuse University Human Rights Film Festival and the annual SU Rising vigil against sexual assault.
Goenka has received prestigious awards including the Chancellor’s Award of Excellence (2009) and the Newhouse Endowed Chair (2016-2019). Her current project, Look Now: Facing Breast Cancer, combines personal narrative with advocacy for breast cancer survivors.
