Tuija Koivunen is a University Lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies at the University of Eastern Finland. Her research focuses on working life dynamics, gender studies, environmental sociology, and qualitative methodologies. She is affiliated with the SUVEF Gender Studies Network and has led projects like 'Gender-based segregation in Finland – borrowing solutions from the neighbors' (2024–2025). Her work bridges ethnographic methods with societal challenges, examining topics such as equal pay policies, sustainable university practices, and labor market transformations.
Her research spans environmental crises, nonhuman animals in education, and the intersection of embodiment and gender. Notable contributions include edited volumes like Everyday stories of work – ethnography of working life (2025) and articles analyzing Iceland's equal pay certification systems. Koivunen emphasizes the role of subjectivity in autoethnography and explores how digitalization and AI reshape work practices.
In grants and collaborations, she has addressed workforce shortages and migration integration.
