Tuba Stouthart

Tuba Stouthart is a Doctoral Candidate and part-time researcher at the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), concurrently serving as a Physics teacher at De Nieuwe Internationale School Esprit (DENISE) in Amsterdam. Previously, she taught Physics at Rivers International School Arnhem (2021), International School Breda (2018-2021), and Istek Schools in Turkey (2017-2018).

Her educational background includes an Integrated Bachelor and Master of Science Program in Teaching Physics from Boğaziçi University, Turkey (2011-2017).

Stouthart's research centers on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Socioscientific Issues (SSI) within STEM education. She investigates how integrating SSI into secondary science classrooms develops critical citizenship skills—such as argumentation, evidence-based reasoning, and ethical decision-making—to advance SDG implementation. Her work specifically examines teacher competences, pedagogical design capacity, and training needs for effective ESD integration in Dutch secondary STEM education.

Analysis of her 2023-2025 publications reveals consistent focus on pre-service teacher development, pedagogical content knowledge, and curriculum design for sustainability education. Key trends include measuring teacher competences in SSI implementation, analyzing student skill development in ESD contexts, and addressing challenges in embedding SDGs within physics/mathematics instruction through socioscientific frameworks.

Funded by NWO's Dudoc-beta programme, her doctoral research examines STEM teachers' competences for SDG implementation via SSI. While she has no formal graduate advisees as a doctoral candidate herself, her work involves collaboration with pre-service teachers and secondary educators. She actively participates in academic conferences including ESERA Summer School (2024) and ICO International Spring School (2023).

As a core member of Group Van der Veen at TU/e, she contributes to science education research aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education (SDG 4) and Climate Action (SDG 13), focusing on transforming STEM pedagogy through socioscientific justice frameworks.
