Troy Schmitz is the Director and Professor of the Morrison School of Agribusiness at Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business. He is also a Senior Global Futures Scholar at the ASU Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation, and affiliated faculty at the Center for Environmental Economics and Sustainability Policy. His research focuses on global agricultural trade, food policy, food security, and the nexus of food, energy, and water systems. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles and multiple textbooks, including Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behavior.
Education: Ph.D. (1995), M.S. (1991) in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Berkeley; B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science (1990) from the University of Saskatchewan.
Research spans global trade policy, biotechnology regulation, and benefit-cost analysis of agricultural programs. Notable grants include $25M+ in proposals and $2M+ in principal investigator funding. He has advised numerous Ph.D. theses and serves on editorial boards for journals like the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
Awards include Arizona State University’s Researcher of the Year (2004) and recognition for outstanding dissertation advising. He teaches courses on global food trade, agribusiness analysis, and applied econometrics.
