Tristan Shuman, PhD is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Computational and Systems Neuroscience. His laboratory is housed in the Hess CSM Building (Room 10-301) at 1470 Madison Avenue in New York City.
Dr. Shuman earned his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, where he investigated how addiction-related memory ensembles contributed to cocaine drug seeking. He then completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, Los Angeles, examining network alterations in epileptic mice before joining the Mount Sinai faculty.
His research program focuses on understanding how the brain produces precise neural activity for memory tasks and how these processes break down in neurological diseases. The Shuman Lab specializes in using in vivo calcium imaging with miniature microscopes and electrophysiology with silicon probes to investigate network alterations in mouse models of epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. His team has made significant contributions to understanding how abnormal circuit processing leads to cognitive deficits and seizures, with particular emphasis on hippocampal and entorhinal cortex function.
Analysis of Dr. Shuman's publication record since 2018 reveals a strong focus on neural circuit mechanisms in epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease, with increasing emphasis on open-source tool development. His work has evolved from studying addiction-related memory ensembles during his PhD to investigating circuit dysfunction in neurological disorders, with recent publications highlighting sophisticated approaches to understanding and manipulating neural synchronization in disease models.
