Dr. Tristan Maerz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan, leading the Maerz Lab within the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories (ORL). His work focuses on the pathogenesis of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA), particularly the role of the synovium and molecular mechanisms driving joint degeneration. The lab emphasizes translational research, aiming to identify druggable targets for disease-modifying therapies. Key areas include biomechanics, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering.
Research interests span synovial fibroblast biology, pain sensitization, and quantitative imaging techniques to assess PTOA severity. Dr. Maerz’s lab employs in vitro, murine models, and clinical cohorts to study acute injury effects on chronic joint disease. Facilities include advanced imaging and molecular analysis tools in the Biomedical Science Research Building.
Recent articles highlight advancements in CDK8 inhibition for fracture healing, CXCL16’s role in pain/inflammation, and sex-based differences in PTOA pathology. The lab prioritizes collaboration and innovation in musculoskeletal health solutions.
