معرفی
Dr. Federica Masieri serves as Associate Professor and Course Leader for Biomedical Science at the University of Suffolk's School of Health, Sciences and Society. Since joining the Science Teaching Team in 2012, she has developed practical-oriented curricula across undergraduate and postgraduate programs while maintaining active research in musculoskeletal regenerative medicine.
Her educational background includes a Master's Degree in Biological Sciences (Biotechnological and Bio-molecular curriculum) with summa cum laude distinction from the University of Ferrara (2005), followed by a PhD in Biomedical, Endocrinological and Neurophysiological Sciences (2009).
Research focuses on regenerative approaches for joint diseases using human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Key investigations explore cellular pathways in chondrocytes and synovial fibroblasts, pro-inflammatory mechanisms in osteoarthritis versus rheumatoid arthritis, and therapeutic applications of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs). Her work bridges molecular biology, orthopedics, and tissue engineering through bioreactor development and in vitro differentiation protocols.
Publication trends from 2008-2012 reveal consistent exploration of electromagnetic field interactions with inflammatory pathways, particularly adenosine receptor modulation and cytokine regulation in joint tissues. The research portfolio demonstrates translational focus from cellular mechanisms to clinical applications in musculoskeletal disorders.
Scientific recognitions include:
- Study Visit Programme by Spinner 2013
- Honorary Academic Fellowship at University of Ferrara
- Master's Degree with summa cum laude and special mention
As project designer for the European-funded Spinner 2013 initiative, she managed international collaborations with orthopedic centers and biomedical companies. Her grant activities span European Community projects and NHS Trust partnerships, while teaching innovations include Science Seminar Series and Bioscience Coffee Mornings to foster student community engagement.
Collaborative networks encompass the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, St. Anna Hospital, Max Planck Institute, and Italian biomedical companies, driving projects on synovial fibroblast cultures, tendon cell pathways, and PEMF-based protocols for post-traumatic joint recovery.
