Associate Professor Trevor Wilmshurst is a faculty member in the Department of Accounting and Accountability at the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics, University of Tasmania, where he has been employed since 2003. He holds the academic rank of Associate Professor and has served in numerous leadership roles including Head of School, Graduate Research Coordinator, and Honours Coordinator. His work spans teaching, research, administration, and professional service.
His educational background includes a PhD from RMIT University, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Commerce from Australian institutions, and teaching qualifications from the University of Melbourne and Monash University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants and the Institute of Financial Accountants (UK).
Trevor's research is primarily focused on sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), environmental reporting, and legitimacy theory. He also investigates integrated reporting, B-Corps, risk management, accounting education, and ethical frameworks in academia. His research extends into small business, data mining, and information systems. He has published extensively in top-tier journals such as Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, and Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal. His recent publications emphasize ethical dimensions of environmental accounting, quality of CSR disclosure, and academic integrity frameworks.
His scholarly output shows a consistent trend toward interdisciplinary research, combining accounting with environmental science, ethics, public policy, and education. He frequently collaborates with researchers across institutions and countries, focusing on governance, transparency, and sustainability in both private and public sectors.

Trevor has supervised over 20 research higher degree students to completion, including PhDs on topics such as stakeholder engagement, legitimacy theory, audit skepticism, data mining, and local government sustainability. He currently supervises three doctoral candidates focusing on net zero accounting, social auditing in adventure tourism, and sustainable development in regional businesses. He has also led curriculum development initiatives, including the Master of Professional Accounting and flexible/blended learning programs.
He is actively involved in research leadership, having chaired the CSEAR 2011 international conference and organized research enrichment symposia. He serves on the UTAS Human Research Ethics Committee as Deputy Chair and has contributed to professional bodies including CPA, CA, and AFAANZ.
