Dr. Trevor Smith is an Associate Professor with joint appointments in the Department of Content Area Teacher Education (College of Education) and the Departments of Physics & Astronomy and STEAM Education at Rowan University. He specializes in physics education research, focusing on assessment innovation, mathematical reasoning development, and increasing STEM teacher diversity.
His research includes developing the Physics Inventory of Quantitative Literacy (PIQL), creating alternative scoring mechanisms for multiple-choice assessments, analyzing covariational reasoning in physics, and implementing the Learning Assistant model. His NSF-funded project 'South Jersey STEM Education Scholars' addresses barriers affecting underrepresented teacher candidates.
Publication analysis shows consistent focus on quantitative literacy assessment, item response theory applications, physics education research, and STEM diversity initiatives. Methodological strengths include psychometric validation and cross-population comparative studies.
Educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Physics (University of Maine)
- M.S.T. in Physics (University of Maine)
- B.S. in Physics (University of Maine)
