Suzanne White Brahmia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington, within the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on mathematization in physics education, including quantitative reasoning, proportional reasoning, and covariational reasoning. She leads projects on Assessable Learning Objectives (ALOs) to standardize introductory physics curricula and improve teaching practices. Her work emphasizes equity and inclusive pedagogy through interventions like Learning Pods and the Extended Physics program.
Dr. Brahmia’s teaching spans introductory physics laboratories and mechanics courses, with a focus on innovative pedagogical strategies. She advises graduate students such as Charlotte Zimmerman (PhD 2023), Jared Canright (PhD 2023), and Andrew Totah-McCarty (MS 2022). Her service contributions include roles on the College Board’s AP Physics 1 Development Committee, the American Physical Society’s Physics Education Research Group, and the National Research Council’s Undergraduate Physics Education Committee.
Her research outputs include over 20 peer-reviewed articles on topics like the Physics Inventory of Quantitative Literacy (PIQL), frameworks for signed quantities, and virtual reality applications in physics education. She collaborates widely on systemic initiatives such as the Physics Union Mathematics (PUM) project and Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE).
