Trevor J Pinch is a Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University, affiliated with The College of Arts & Sciences. He holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences, reflecting his significant contributions to interdisciplinary research. His work bridges sociology, technology, sound studies, and cultural analysis. He has authored influential books such as Entanglements and Analog Days, exploring topics like musical instrument development and the Moog synthesizer's impact.
Pinch earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Bath, M.Sc. in Liberal Studies of Science from the University of Manchester, and B.Sc. in Physics from Imperial College, London University. His research focuses on three core areas: the sociology of technology and user engagement, sound studies/musicology (including instrument design and digital archives), and market dynamics in persuasive communication.
He has been honored with the 2018 J.D. Bernal Prize from the Society for Social Studies of Science and an honorary degree from the University of Maastricht. Collaborations include projects on machine learning for musical instrument recognition with Cornell’s Serge Belongie and work on digitizing the Montreux Jazz Festival Archive with EPFL researchers. Pinch is also a performing musician with the Electric Golem, blending academic rigor with creative practice.
His publications span sound studies, technology sociology, and interdisciplinary methodologies, emphasizing the entanglement of human and technological systems.
