Professor Trevor Herbert is a renowned music scholar and Emeritus Professor of Music at the Royal College of Music (RCM) and the Open University. He specializes in brass instruments, military music, and cultural history, with a focus on the British brass band tradition. His research spans medieval to modern periods, incorporating jazz and vernacular music. Herbert has held roles as a trombonist, researcher, and doctoral supervisor at RCM. He is the author of seminal works like The British Brass Band: A Musical and Social History and The Trombone, and editor of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Brass Instruments. His awards include the Christopher Monk Award (2002), Anthony Baines Prize (2014), and a 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Trombone Association.
Research interests include brass instrument history, music's social role, and performance practices.
