He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee (2017), followed by postdoctoral roles at the University of South Florida and The Ohio State University before joining Arizona in 2022. His research examines the intersections of environmental sustainability, population ethics, and animal welfare, particularly through lenses of climate justice and ethical responsibility.
Key research areas include the moral implications of overpopulation, climate change mitigation strategies, lab-grown meat ethics, and ethical marketing practices. Hedberg authored the influential book The Environmental Impact of Overpopulation: The Ethics of Procreation (2020) and has contributed to peer-reviewed articles on animal rights, greenhouse gas reduction obligations, and policy frameworks for sustainable family planning.
Teaching emphasizes ethics courses supporting the FER (Future Earth Resilience) and HHV (Health and Human Values) minors. His work bridges philosophical theory with practical societal challenges, often appearing in interdisciplinary forums such as his podcast feature on The Overpopulation episode.
